Stresses Principle of “One Country” for Hong Kong

China Institute of Our Hong Kong Foundation invited Professor Jin Yinan of College of Defence Studies, NDU, PLA, China, to speak on how China has evolved from a war-torn and devastated country to a global power for the past century. Professor Jin himself is an expert in national security strategy and a military writer, who has studied at the National Defense University of the United States and Royal Military Academy Sandhurst of Britain. Professor Jin described today’s international relations as featuring both co-operations and conflicts. He called on countries in Asia Pacific to co-operate and focus on economic development so as to maintain stability and prosperity for the region.

Commenting on the internationalisation of the South China Sea conflict, Professor Jin said though Singapore is not involved in the conflict, the city-state country has proactively made the issue internationalised so as to intensify the Sino-US confrontation in the region. At the same time, the United States leveraged the Changing military base to intervene the sea access extended by China. In order to achieve peace and stability of the South China Sea, he called on neighbouring states of the Sea, in particular the ASEAN member states focus on economic development and not to push any military race. Professor Jin said as long as the United States does not provokes, genuine co-operation between states in the South China Sea would be realised some days.

Professor Jin was optimistic about an even closer Sino-US relations. He pointed out that the new US Administration would revive the economy as President-elect Donald Trump called for 'home-coming' of manufacturing industries. This will provide a conjunction point for both powers to further develop the relations and more capacity for future co-operation. On the military exchanges, Professor Jin expected that there would be more progresses than those under Obama administration.

Regarding so-called 'Hong Kong Independence', Professor Jin said that the policy of 'One Country Two Systems' has been the most flexible offer ever in human history. Should the policy be successfully implemented, freedom and way of life in Hong Kong can be protected. Professor Jin remarked that 'One Country' is the principle and also the pre-condition, so the Central Government would not make any concession. He reminded the general public of Hong Kong that the city has no conditions for independence and the economy would be affected if the society is being too politicised.

Mrs Eva Cheng, Executive Director of OHKF, remarked that OHKF is honoured to have Professor Jin to share his views and insights with people of Hong Kong on how our country has evolved from a war-torn and devastated country to a global power.
