(17 January 2020, Hong Kong) Members of the Public Policy Institute Healthcare and Ageing Research and Advocacy team discussed how overseas talents could help to tackle Hong Kong’s doctor shortage with members of the New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association on 17th January, 2020.

Sufficient healthcare manpower is fundamental for a well-functioning health system which provides timely and appropriate care to meet the population’s healthcare needs. Our Hong Kong Foundation believes the government should urgently address the severe shortage of doctors in Hong Kong.

While stepping up measures to retain local doctors in the public sector and increasing local training capacity are important measures, Our Hong Kong Foundation’s “Health System Capacity Constraints - The Severe Shortage of Doctors in Hong Kong Public Hospitals” report points to the fundamental need to augment the role of qualified foreign-trained doctors  in addressing local manpower shortfalls, particularly in the public sector.
