想了解北宋都城的社會面貌，這幅「清明上河圖」就生動記錄汴河面岸的繁榮景象，顯示宋代對外貿易相當蓬勃，當時香港作為海上絲綢之路的貿易中轉站，有水運之利，開始吸引中原氏族向南遷移來香港定居，包括錦田的鄧氏、上水的侯氏、粉嶺的彭氏、新田的文氏、上水的廖氏等等。

秦漢是中國歷史上大一統時期，漢武帝將嶺南地域重新納入版圖，所以在香港不少地方都發現過漢代的古蹟。1955年有工人在深水埗徙置大廈工程施工期間，無意中發現了一座古墓，這座就是李鄭屋漢墓。

香港這顆東方之珠，其實早在七千年前的新石器時代的中期，已有人類的活動，不過「香港」這名稱在古代典籍上出現，最早要追溯到明代郭棐所編的「粵大記」。
