High-quality Belt and Road Development: From Regional Cooperation to Hong Kong’s Transformation and Potential
Our Hong Kong Foundation (OHKF) held the Insight Forum, entitled “High-quality Belt and Road Development: From Regional Cooperation to Hong Kong’s Transformation and Potential”, on 16 September. OHKF was honoured to have Dr Jonathan Choi, Chairman, the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, Hong Kong, Chairman, Sunwah Group, and Special Counsellor, OHKF, as the keynote speaker, Bernard Chan, Chairman, OHKF and Chairman & President, Asia Financial Holdings Limited, as the opening speaker, and Nicholas Ho, Commissioner for Belt and Road, the Government of the HKSAR, as the closing speaker.
In his keynote speech, Dr Jonathan Choi highlighted the deep engagement of Hong Kong in the high-quality construction processes of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) by leveraging its "C.I.O." functions, with "C" for Connector, "I" for Investor, and "O" for Operator.
In the opening remarks, Bernard Chan emphasised the need for Hong Kong to add value to the country under the BRI by playing its unique role in identifying opportunities for sustainable development.
In the closing remarks, Nicholas Ho shared that, since September this year, the government had been organising a series of BRI-related activities, which would create synergy, foster Hong Kong’s collaboration in a diverse range of sectors under the BRI, and showcase the fruitful outcomes of the BRI in people-to-people exchanges.
The moderator of the panel session, Johnny Chan, Adjunct Professor, City University of Hong Kong, and Chairman, Titan Works Limited, had an in-depth discussion with Dr Jonathan Choi and Nicholas Ho regarding Hong Kong’s note-worthy new areas, modes, and opportunities in ASEAN, and how the city’s government could best assist the local businessmen in exploring the BRI market.
The Forum attracted over 200 in-person and online attendees, including political and business leaders, industry representatives, foreign consulates, and professionals.
The Forum was pleased to have the Belt and Road Office, the Government of the HKSAR, the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, the Hong Kong-Thailand Business Council, and the Hong Kong-Vietnam Chamber of Commerce as the supporting organisations, and Sun Hung Kai Properties as the venue sponsor.
ASEAN is Hong Kong’s second-largest trading partner and the world’s fifth-largest economic bloc. Chief Executive John Lee has led three delegations to seven ASEAN countries - Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. The objective was to develop closer relationships and explore opportunities for deeper economic and cultural collaboration through the broad range of possibilities within the Belt and Road Initiative, while highlighting Hong Kong’s unique role in supporting its development.
As a key link for the Belt and Road, Hong Kong can provide an ideal platform for ASEAN countries to expand their business across the region.
