Rethink Hong Kong Forum: Hong Kong’s New Role as an International City under the New Normal

Our Hong Kong Foundation (OHKF) and the Center for China & Globalization (CCG) co-organised the “Rethink Hong Kong Forum: Hong Kong’s New Role as an International City under the New Normal” (the Forum) on 2 December. In today's rapidly changing global arena, there are multifaceted challenges and opportunities. Hong Kong, as a "super-connector" and "super value-adder", has unique advantages and roles in many aspects, including systems, environments, and talent. The aims of the Forum were to identify strategies for achieving breakthroughs in a complex environment, to promote continuous exchange and collaboration between the East and the West, and to explore new opportunities under the policy framework of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, ASEAN, and all countries and regions along the Belt and Road. The Forum received over 600 attendees.
Bernard Chan, Chairman of OHKF and Chairman & President of Asia Financial Holdings Limited, and Dr Henry Huiyao Wang, Founder and President of Center for China & Globalization (CCG) and Former Counselor to China State Council, delivered the opening remarks.
The first session, “China’s Role in the Changing Global Economy and Implications for Hong Kong”, explored how Hong Kong’s unique edge as the “super-connector” between the Mainland and the world evolved amidst the escalating geo-political tensions, the new global trade dynamics, and shifting investment patterns.
Investigating two emerging sectors of cooperation from a macro- to a mirco-market perspective, the second session, “China's Role in the Belt and Road and ASEAN Emerging Markets and Opportunities for Hong Kong”, delved into the significant role of China in cementing the ties between the Belt and Road Initiative and ASEAN, and how Hong Kong can leverage the two vast economics and the city’s “new quality productive forces” to attract investments and foster strategic partnerships.
The third session, “Rethink Hong Kong: Role and Transformation as a New International City”, centred on redefining Hong Kong’s role. It discussed how Hong Kong harnesses its new development beyond the traditional pillar industries by strengthening its international connectivity and fostering sectorial collaborations.
The Forum was brought to a close by Douglas Woo, Chairman & Managing Director of Wheelock and Company Limited.
The Forum gained strong support from various sectors, including the Strategic Partner, China Center for International Economic Exchanges; the Supporting Organisations, Invest Hong Kong, the Government of the HKSAR; Office for Attracting Strategic Enterprises, the Government of the HKSAR; Hong Kong Trade Development Council; China–United States Exchange Foundation; Greater Bay Area Homeland Youth Community Foundation; and Hong Kong-ASEAN Foundation; and the Venue Sponsor, Conrad Hong Kong.
