Dr Nelson WONG

Dr. Wong studied Medicine in London on a British Council scholarship.  He is a public policy advocate and was a former Vice-Chairman of Business and Professionals Federation of Hong Kong.  He has particular interest in health economics and care delivery models.

Hailed as the "Father of Managed Care in Hong Kong", he was the invited author of a book chapter on Managed Care in The University of Hong Kong position book on Hong Kong’s Health System in 2006. He was appointed by the Food and Health Bureau to serve on the Working Group on Primary Care from 2008 to 2016.  As an expert in corporate medical schemes, he has served on contract medicine committees and written an Editorial on this subject in a Hong Kong Medical Association Newsletter.

He is a serial entrepreneur, having built and sold 3 successful medical firms to 3 different listed companies.  He co-founded Allied Medical Practices Guild with an innovative structure and a disruptive business model in 1982.  He pioneered a unique intranet Point-of-Sale system to facilitate medical scheme eligibility check with transactions capture at clinics and Electronic Data Interchange with back office in 1998, before e-commerce became prevalent.  

After a brief retirement in the UK, he returned to Hong Kong to take the helm of Dr. Vio & Partners in 2005.  Vio is the first and only medical network with both ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management and ISO 27001:2022 Information security management systems certifications as of 2025. Under his leadership the Vio network has become one of the largest corporate medical scheme operators in Hong Kong.  He was formerly a part-time Medical Director of numerous insurers and multinationals.   After a period of self-study, he was awarded the Fellowship Diploma of the Life Management Institute (FLMI) with Distinction in 1987.  He has also developed an effective prescription benefit management system.
