Mr TUNG Chee-hwa

Mr Tung Chee Hwa was a Vice Chairman of the Tenth to the Thirteenth National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, People’s Republic of China. From July 1997 to March 2005, Mr Tung served as the first Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (“HKSAR”), People’s Republic of China. He is also Founding Chairman of the China-United States Exchange Foundation and Our Hong Kong Foundation.

In 2019, Mr Tung was presented a national honorary medal for his outstanding contribution to “One Country, Two Systems” and in the successful return and transition of sovereignty of Hong Kong to China. Mr Tung was awarded Grand Bauhinia Medal by the HKSAR government in 2006.

The Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference ("CPPCC") is one of the most important government institutions of the People’s Republic of China. Major responsibilities include formulation of policies, overseeing of government work and development of consultative democracy. It plays a key role in ensuring that public opinions are reflected in the government and that government policies are understood by the people. Members of the CPPCC include distinguished former government officials, well-known professionals, renowned academics; they also come from different political, religious and ethnic groups across China. 

The China-United States Exchange Foundation, established in 2008, is a non-profit organisation registered in Hong Kong. Mr Tung is Founding Chairman and is supported by friends in Hong Kong, China and the United States. The mission is to promote better understanding and strengthening of China-US relations by fostering open dialogue between leaders of governments, think tanks, academia, media and business communities of both countries.

Our Hong Kong Foundation is a non-profit organisation established in Hong Kong in 2014. Its mission is to promote the long-term and overall interests of Hong Kong through public policy research, analysis and recommendations. Pooling local, Mainland and international talents, the Foundation studies Hong Kong’s development needs, offering multidisciplinary public policy recommendations and solutions to foster social cohesion, economic prosperity and sustainable development. 

Born in 1937 in Shanghai, Mr Tung spent his childhood in Hong Kong. He received his education in the United Kingdom, graduating from University of Liverpool with a BSc degree in 1960. After that, he spent nine years in the United States working for General Electric and later in the family business. In 1969, Mr Tung returned to Hong Kong to help run the family business. He has had a successful and distinguished career in business while serving in various public sector and advisory positions in Hong Kong. In 1997, he was sworn in as HKSAR’s first Chief Executive. 

Mr Tung is married to Betty Chiu Hung Ping. They have three children and nine grandchildren.
