Dr Jonathan K S CHOI

Dr. Jonathan K S Choi is Chairman of the Hong Kong-based Sunwah Group, Chairman of the Hong Kong-listed Sunwah Kingsway Capital Group, Chairman of VinaCapital Group of Vietnam and Independent Non-executive Director of BOC Hong Kong (Holdings) Limited. Established in 1957, Sunwah’s business now covers eight principal areas: Seafood & Foodstuff, Real Estate, Financial Services, Technology, Media, Infrastructure Education & training and Green Tech & Health Care. Activities extend deep into Mainland China as well as to the environs of Macau, Vietnam, Cambodia, Singapore, Japan and across the oceans to Canada, the United States and Australia.

Dr Choi is active in community and international affairs which is evident in the wide range of public positions he holds. These mainly include: Standing Committee Member of National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (NCCPPCC) of the P.R.C; Vice President of China Overseas Friendship Association; Vice-Chairman of Chinese Association of Hong Kong & Macao Studies; Chairman of Guangdong-HK-Macao Bay Area Entrepreneurs Alliance; Chairman of the Hong Kong Chinese General Chamber of Commerce; Member of Board of Directors of Boao Forum for Asia (BFA); Chairman of the Association for the Promotion of Global Chinese Traders Fraternity; Member of Chief Executive's Council of Advisers; Council Member of Hong Kong Trade Development Council; Chairman (Hong Kong) of Mainland China-Hong Kong Belt and Road Business and Professional Services Council; Founding Chairman of the Hong Kong - Vietnam Chamber of Commerce; Founding Chairman of Hong Kong - Korea Business Council etc.

Dr. Choi was elected in 2025 as Chairman of Foundation of Tsinghua University Center for Advanced Study. He also serves as a board member or advisor to several universities, including Fudan University, Nanjing University, and Sun Yat-sen University. Over the years, Dr. Choi has been awarded honorary doctoral degrees by numerous universities in China and abroad, including Michigan State University (USA), Lingnan University (Hong Kong), Vietnam National University, Hanoi, De Montfort University (UK), University of Alberta (Canada), Hong Kong Metropolitan University, and the National University of Management (Cambodia).

In 2015, Dr. Choi was conferred the ‘Friendship Order’ by the President of Vietnam and became an Honorary Ambassador of Foreign Investment Promotion for Korea from 2015 to 2019 respectively. In January 2019, Dr. Choi was awarded the Medal of Merit on Education by Macau S.A.R Government and was awarded an honor of ‘Friends of Diplomacy’ by the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of P.R.C. in Hong Kong for his tremendous contribution on implementing non-official diplomacy, promoting Chinese culture to foreign countries. In November 2022, Dr. Choi was conferred The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon by Japanese Government. In September 2023, Dr. Choi was conferred the ‘Officier de la Légion d'Honneur’ by the French President. In January 2024, Dr. Choi was conferred the Royal Order of Sahametrei - Moha Sereyvath by Kingdom of Cambodia. In September of the same year, he received the ASEAN Outstanding Entrepreneur Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Choi has been awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal (GBM), the Gold Bauhinia Star (GBS) and Justice of the Peace (JP) by the HKSAR Government for his meritorious public and community service.
