Our Hong Kong Foundation Mourns Its Founder and Honorary Chairman, The Honourable Tung Chee-hwa
Our Hong Kong Foundation expresses profound sorrow on the passing of its Founder and Honorary Chairman, the Honourable Tung Chee-hwa, on 8 September 2026, and extends our deepest condolences to Mr Tung’s family.
Mr Tung has devoted his life towards the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong, under “One Country, Two Systems”, especially during his roles as the first Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and a former Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
He brought remarkable vision and foresight to his enduring commitment to Hong Kong’s future.
In November 2014, Mr Tung founded Our Hong Kong Foundation with the aim of bringing together new ideas and fresh perspectives. Grounded firmly in Hong Kong’s long-term interests, he sought to build consensus and chart new pathways for the city.
Mr Tung also established Academy of Chinese Studies and Hong Kong Chronicles Institute, both of which have since become part of Our Hong Kong Foundation, underscoring his dedication to presenting China's story and preserving Hong Kong's historical narrative. In September 2023, Mr Tung became Honorary Chairman and continued to offer his steadfast support for the Foundation’s development.
Mr Tung’s vision, intellectual breadth and unwavering dedication provided a solid and enduring bedrock for the Foundation. We are incredibly grateful for his dedication and support towards the Foundation, which will continue to guide us as we pursue our founding missions of advancing public policy research, promoting Chinese culture, compiling Hong Kong Chronicles, and making a meaningful contribution to Hong Kong’s long-term prosperity and to the development of our nation.
Mr Tung will always be remembered.
