Clinical research is not only beneficial to patients but also crucial for I&T development in Hong Kong. Professor Philip Chiu, the Dean of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), pointed out that clinical research covers a wide range of fields and requires the collaboration of experts from diverse backgrounds, including medical professors, doctors, data analysts, data interpreters, nurses and so on. The entire research cycle typically lasts several years. Additionally, clinical research relies on a lot of patient data, which requires cooperation and assistance from hospitals.

Professor Chiu also emphasized the importance of talent development for the future I&T industry in Hong Kong. As an example, CU Medicine initiated a program a decade ago to cultivate multi-skilled talents in the medical field. According to Professor Chiu, a considerable number of graduates have chosen to pursue careers related to clinical research.

Our recent report "Developing Hong Kong into Asia’s Leading Clinical Innovation Hub" suggests that the Government should formulate a comprehensive talent development strategy to build career paths for researchers, research coordinators, research nurses, and other supporting personnel. This strategy should focus on nurturing young talents while maximizing the potential of existing professionals.
