Letter from the President: Starting Our Next 10 Years
Dear friends of Our Hong Kong Foundation,
Starting Our Next 10 Years
Warm Greetings from OHKF! On behalf of OHKF, may I wish you good health and happiness in 2025.
This is the first of OHKF’s next 10 years. As a think tank, we start our next 10 years not just with well wishes but also “worries”, as enlightened by an ancient Chinese wise man who counseled: “Worry before the world worries, rejoice after the world rejoices. (先天下之憂而憂，後天下之樂而樂). ”
This mindset of “fore-worried” imparts forethought, envisioning potential problems, and developing innovative solutions to mitigate problems and create new opportunities. It gets us to do the right things and do things right for Hong Kong’s next 10 years.
What will Hong Kong look like in 10 years? How to reduce the long waiting time for public housing? How to improve healthcare for the sick? How to create new opportunities and fulfilling jobs for our young people when AI and robots are taking over both manual and cerebral jobs? How to diversify our economy and seize the new opportunities it presents?
Where would the rising geopolitical tensions take us to? How best to further integrate our development with national development and particularly with GBA development while preserving our uniqueness as the world’s most international city that attracts capital and talents from across the world?
Since the founding of OHKF by Mr CH Tung in 2014, Hong Kong people have gone through a fair share of challenges: financial storms, political rifts, social unrests, Covid.
There were problems we foresaw and prepared for but which subsequently didn’t happen because of our forethought and effective mitigations. There were things we didn’t anticipate and they hit us like covid. This is why as a think tank we need to be in a chronic state of thoughtfulness and readiness to provide independent and unbiased policy research and analysis.
Joining Hands
In the face of the magnitude of what needs to be done over the next 10 years, our strategy is to tap the collective wisdom and resources of the community by broadening our circle of engagement and deepening our collaboration with partners in everything we do.
To lift our economy, our policy research in 2025 would get us future-ready through research on Application of AI, Low Altitude Economy, Digital Economy, Biotech Development, Aviation Hub, Re-skilling for our Workforce, Green Tech and Green Finance.
To improve people’s livelihood, we would do research on Sports Ecosystem, Smart Mobility, Sustainable Urban Renewal, Senior Living, Sports for Elderly, Eldercare Ecosystem, Gerontech, End-of-Life Care 3.0, Chinese Medicine 2.0, Healthcare Financing, Cross-Boundary Retirement.
All these are on top of our ongoing policy research projects such as Hong Kong Housing Landscape Navigator, GBA Industry Development Index, Entrepreneurship in GBA.
Our second core mission is Chinese culture promotion. In 2025 we have launched a three-year Chinese cultural ambassador project to provide a solid cultural grounding to secondary school students across Hong Kong through deep-dive cultural immersion. We are grateful for The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust for its funding support.
We are continuing our full range of on-going cultural promotion activities including export of cultural contents in English language to the international community, TV mini-series, school quiz, production of learning and teaching materials, on-line self-learning platforms, training programme for teachers and civil servants.
Ten years from now today’s students would have become the pillars of our community. When we look back we would realise how much the continuous trickling down of our cultural promotion work has contributed to a proud and enlightened citizenry.
Our third core mission – Hong Kong Chronicles (HKCI) compilation – is making steadfast progress and would reach a publication peak this year. In this year’s July Book Fair, you would see the launch of eight HKCI Books on “Economy”. The remaining nine books on Economy are on track for completion in year 2026. Manuscripts for the 13 Books on Culture would have their editorial vetting completed this year. These books are a vast treasure of history and insight.
Our strategic communications programme and digital outreach efforts would ensure that the insights our research have generated and original contents we produced would reach local, national, and the international communities.
Hong Kong Re-Envisioned
Our wish is that by 2034, Hong Kong would have become a far happier place than it now is – although compared with many other places we are now already a blessed city due to the support of our country and the resilience of our people.
We wish that the long waiting time for public housing and healthcare would be a thing of the past. Metropole would be a new boom town. People in GBA and in all its 9+2 cities would all enjoy quality of life. People from the West and the East and from the North and the South would flock to this city of dream, dancing hand in hand. Hong Kong people’s joyous laughters would echo across the Victoria Harbour as they rejoice.
At the time of writing this letter to you, I and my senior management team members are also meeting our Advisors over a series of tea gathering and informal lunch meetings to listen to their views. As an NGO that pools our community’s collective wisdom to build a better Hong Kong, we would make every effort to be responsive to aspirations and suggestions.
